Woodlake Barn

New extensions to existing house

01. The Brief

Our clients needed an architect in Woodland, Devon to provide them with a Full exterior and interior design service for their New extensions to existing house

02. Project Detail

An old cottage located on the edge of a disused quarry, which is now a lake, had run into disrepair. The cottage had been extended in the 60’s, however the additions were both unsympathetic to the main cottage and clumsily executed.

We began by building a new extension, parallel to the existing, to create much needed new accommodation and balance to the overall composition of the house. The new elevation, orientated towards the lake, has an expressed double gable with a large amount of glazing. A stone plinth and slate hanging first floor allow the new extensions to blend harmoniously with the existing cottage. Finally the internal arrangement was re-modelled with the kitchen located in the new, double height extension. The house now has a balance of intimate, cosy spaces alongside open, lofty living accommodation.

The planning approval was granted in 2010 with unanimous Committee support, after the local authority recommended the application for refusal. Construction was completed in 2011.

04. Client Testimonial

We engaged van Ellen + Sheryn to come up with a new, inspirational design for our barn, where others had failed. We were delighted with their response, and in their handling of the planning process. Our fantastic home is testament to their sympathetic design approach.
