Construction In Progress

van Ellen + Sheryn’s mid-century ‘Eichler’ inspired home on the Southhams coast has commenced on site this year. Construction is progressing well, with the feature Glu-Lam frame up, and the over-sailing zinc roof to be completed shortly.

The owners approached the practice to transform their bungalow into a grand new coastal home for their young family. Prior to purchasing the property, the clients had lived in America, and they wished to replicate the mid-century style architecture they had previously lived in. A design scheme quickly developed, with the use of expressed timber frame, over-sailing roof planes, and a palette of dark grey and white.

A steeply sloping site allowed the insertion of a new storey beneath the existing bungalow, and breaking open the sea-facing elevation whilst replacing the roof structure has transformed house.

BELOW: Despite its fantastic location and larger neighbouring dwellings, the existing bungalow was small, cold and uninspiring.

BELOW: The clients presented us with a clear brief to design a mid-century style home, with the below images providing precedent.
