Oak and glass kitchen extension completed for countryside property near Totnes, South Devon

In April 2016, van Ellen + Sheryn completed the extension of a detached house near Totnes, with local contractor Tom Hilliard.  The oak and glass extension provides a new kitchen and dining room to the house, and gives a new and improved connection with the garden and the beautiful views beyond towards the Harbourne River.

As seen  in the photos below, the previous house layout suffered from a lack of natural daylight, and had little connection to the garden and views.

However, by opening up  the corner of the house and framing the space in glass, a large new heart of the home was created.

The kitchen, by Barnes of Ashburton , creates a functional and contemporary kitchen space that makes the most of the open relationship with the dining area and the views out through the glass extension.

The windows were fabricated in a combination of Douglas Fir and Oak, selected for their build and material qualities, and treated with a UV protective oil to retain the deep natural colour of the wood.

The extension is roofed in standing seam zinc, a material selected not only for its aesthetic qualities, but its technical capabilities. The shallow roof pitch which this material can achieve permits the extension to fit comfortably beneath existing window openings at first floor whilst still giving a generous headroom internally.
